Ms. Jo-anne Leslie De Vries BA, LLB University of Tasmania

Ms. Jo-anne Leslie De Vries is a highly experienced and accomplished lawyer with over 25 years of experience in various areas of law. She completed her Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Law (LLB) at the University of Tasmania, Australia in 1993 with a major in Administration, History, and Labor Management Relations. She was called to the Malaysian Bar on April 28, 1995.

Ms. De Vries’ legal career began with her reading in chambers under Mr. Wong Sai Heng at Messrs Presgrave & Matthews from 1994 to 1995. She subsequently worked as a legal assistant at Messrs Presgrave & Matthews from 1995 to 1999 before joining Messrs Cheong & Oon as a partner from 1999 to 2001. Since 2001, she has been a senior partner at Messrs Cheong, De Vries & Co. and has been managing partner since 2009.

Ms. De Vries has a wealth of experience in various areas of law, including admiralty, intellectual property, labor law, insurance-related claims and litigation, general debt collection litigation, and others. She has a personal portfolio of banking litigation and has worked with clients such as Majlis Perbandaran Pulau Pinang, RHB Bank Berhad (Regional Loan Centre), Pacific Bank Berhad, Hong Leong Finance Berhad, and various other financial institutions, handling their debt collection and litigation matters.

She is also well-versed in non-banking corporate litigation and has represented clients such as Boustead Trading and Copthorne Hotel. She has extensive experience in general conveyancing and commercial matters and is highly competent in the areas of family law and succession law. Additionally, she has developed an expertise in Media, Leisure & Tourism Industry Law.

Ms. De Vries’ broad range of legal expertise, combined with her dedication to providing practical solutions to clients’ problems, has earned her a reputation as a highly skilled and trusted legal advisor.

Mr. Chan Szu Fu LLB (Hons) University of Liverpool

Mr. Chan is a seasoned lawyer with extensive experience in a wide range of legal areas. He completed his Bachelor of Law (LLB) with Honours at the University of Liverpool in 2004 and subsequently pursued his Bar Vocational Course (BVC) at BPP Law School, London, where he specialized in employment law and judicial review. Mr. Chan’s legal expertise also extends to internet law, intellectual property, commercial real property, company law, commercial law, trusts, and estate.

Throughout his career, Mr. Chan has been actively involved in civil, corporate, and trust litigation, and has successfully handled numerous cases ranging from debt collection and estate and land disputes to trust and corporate litigation. His experience in litigation enables him to provide practical advice and consultation to clients.

Mr. Chan is the only lawyer in Penang with qualifications from the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) in 2012/2013, demonstrating his in-depth knowledge and interest in the area of trusts and estate.

Prior to joining Cheong, De Vries & Co. (now Chan, De Vries & Co.) as a partner, Mr. Chan worked as a legal assistant at Messrs Lim Kean Siew & Co. and undertook his pupillage under Mr. T. Tharumarajah at Messrs T. Tharuma & Associates. He also served as a part-time lecturer at College PTPL in Law of Trust (LLB) and Criminal Law (LLB) from 2010 to 2012.

At Chan, De Vries & Co., Mr. Chan is known for his expertise in handling complex legal issues and providing practical solutions to clients’ problems. He is a key member of the firm’s litigation team, and his extensive experience in litigation allows him to provide clients with sound legal advice and representation in court.

Ms. Khoo Ai Nee LLB (Hons) University of Northumbria

Ms. Khoo Ai Nee obtained her Bachelor of Law (LLB) with Honours from the University of Northumbria and a Certificate in Legal Practice in 2006. She was called to the Malaysian Bar on February 1st 2008 and completed her reading in chambers under Messrs Wong-Chooi & Mohd. Nor in 2007.

She has worked as a legal assistant at various firms, including Lim Kean Siew & Co, KY Lim & Partners, Stephen & Co, and currently serving as Legal Assistant at Chan, De Vries & Co. She is currently practicing in the field of conveyancing and estate administration.

Ms. Sharanya Shanmugam LLB (Hons) London

Miss Sharanya Shanmugam holds a LL. B (Hons) from University of London. Having completed the Certificate in Legal Practice examination in 2018, she commenced her pupillage at Othman Hashim & Co under the supervision of Mr.Kanthavil Karapiah where she was exposed to motor vehicle personal injury claims.

She is currently serving as a legal assistant at Chan, De Vries & Co and practices civil litigation.

Next, we have Nur Farahin Binti Abdul Kader, our diligent legal clerk with a diploma in law. Farah’s strong legal foundation and attention to detail make her an invaluable member of our team. Lastly, we have the highly experienced Nurhazneeta Binti Harun, who boasts over 10 years of expertise in the area of conveyancing practice. While juggling her responsibilities, Nurhazneeta is also pursuing a LLB degree, showcasing her commitment to professional growth and enhancing her legal knowledge.
